These career development models provide an effective guide for testers and BA’s looking to improve their skills and progress their careers. It is a model that has proven effective for around 1000 Planit employees, used internally to develop and benchmark the skills of our large team of permanent software testers and business analysts.

Software Testing Career Pathway

Software testing is a booming profession that offers a rewarding and structured career path with clearly defined roles and qualifications. Highly recognised international testing accreditations include ISTQB and CAT, with many other practical courses also being available for niche skill sets.

As an entry level Tester, you will primarily be performing test execution and acquiring basic skills to ensure systems meet performance standards required by the business and end-user.

Progressing to Test Analyst and then on to Senior Test Analyst, you will work on more complex scenarios, become involved in requirements analysis and test case design as well as execution. As a Test Analyst you will also be able to become involved in the specialist areas of Test Automation and Performance and as a Senior Test Analyst you’ll start taking responsibility for junior staff.

With further progression to Test Consultant / Manager, you gain responsibility for managing teams and creating test strategy to align project testing with business objectives.

The career pathway covers a variety of test methods; unit testing, integration testing, system testing, acceptance testing, functional testing, non functional and regression testing.

Business Analysis Career Pathway

Business analysis is a rapidly growing profession that has a long way to go before reaching maturity in the Australasian market. It is a profession that benefits from a wealth of international accreditations, primarily with BCS and IIBA.

At an entry level, you will work in a Requirements Engineer role, eliciting, analysing and documenting business systems requirements for Business As Usual (BAU) and projects.

Progressing to Business Analyst and then on to Senior Business Analyst, you’ll work on more complex scenarios, continuing to perform requirements engineering while becoming involved in process and systems improvement, specialised systems analysis, feasibility studies and business case development. As a Senior Business Analyst or BA Lead, you’ll start taking responsibility for junior staff.

With further progression to BA Consultant / Manager, you gain responsibility for managing teams and strategy, aligning test projects with business objectives.

The top tier in our career pathway is Business Architect / Strategic Business Analyst, which are very senior BA roles that bring leadership and process excellence to BA practices.
