Planit Software Testing Index

The Planit Software Testing Index was initiated to provide a service to Planit’s clients by producing valuable benchmark information on testing, so that they could better research, plan, budget and execute their software testing strategies for more successful IT project implementations.

Now in its second year, this survey reports on the “state of the nation” for software testing in Australia and for the first time New Zealand, it covers how the industry is changing, where the challenges lie and what factors are influencing it.

This years Index report was written as the global economy seeks to navigate turbulent waters. By the time it was published, the economy is a very different place. During the past 2 years, organisations have generally been expanding business capability in a growing market, to respond to strong demand and high levels of consumer confidence. Australian and New Zealand organisations face a more challenging year in FY 2009. It will be interesting to see if organisations put more focus on software testing in FY 2009 as a way to reduce the high cost of project over-runs.

  1. Software projects cost on average $17.8 million, however more than half of these are still not completed on time or on budget, while 5% are cancelled altogether.
  2. De-scoping is seen as the “fix” but it only highlights that budget overruns rapidly grow when projects are completed late.

  3. Organisations that budget more on software testing as part of their IT spend will improve the likelihood of their projects’ success.

  4. Demand for certified testing professionals is increasing, heightening the need for qualified and skilled staff.
